The Power of a Pencil

The Power of a Pencil

We have so many of them after all. It’s easy to overlook the power it has in the busyness of our lives. We can buy pencils in bulk and use one after another. What could a single pencil teach us?

The Pencil is a charming story and a lesson for us all about using the things we have wisely. It is a story about an Inuktitut family living in an Igluu. The mother has a few cherished possessions, one of which is a pencil. The immense joy the family gets from using that one pencil to draw is a good reminder to take a moment to appreciate all the things we have but overlook.

Today, as you go through your day, find something you have overlooked, it could be the coffee you drink, the clothes you wear, or the food you eat and take a moment to appreciate the value it brings to your life.

Try these steps:

  1. Notice one thing you have overlooked
  2. Consider how it enhances your life and the lives of others
  3. How would your life be without it
  4. Examine the details of this thing closely 5. Consider the journey it takes to get to you

The goal is to slow down and become more mindful so you can appreciate all the small things that help you be you.  Check out the book at your local library. I hope you like it as much as I have.

Cheers.
