Review of the visitphilly.com by Happy Cog

by Rizwan on February 22, 2010

Website: http://www.visitphilly.com/ (beta)

Designed by Happy Cog

Home Page

What they did good:
Simple, clean and colorful. That is how I would describe the redesign of the visitphilly.com website. I really like the vivid images that are used on the background as they are colorful and grab my attention. Many designers are afraid of taking up a lot of space before the main content but the designers at Happy Cog showed a great example of crushing that myth and doing it in style.

To improve:
The Featured Listings on the home page look great but the images and the titles of the sections should also be clickable. Right now the only way to get to that article is to click on the small More link.

Great Job by everyone at Happy Cog

Rule 11: Go Green

by Rizwan on February 22, 2010

Rule 11: Go Green
Instead of coffee or black tea, drink three cups of green tea per day. Use decaffeinated green tea if it gets you too wired. Regular consumption of green tea has been linked to a significant reduction in the risk for developing cancer. Green tea contains chemicals known as polyphenols, which have antioxidant properties.

Other rules to help avoid cancer or slow it down if you already have cancer.

I have reduced the amount of coffee I drink in a day. Now if only I can quit coffee and tea completely.

Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life.

by Rizwan on February 8, 2010

As I was waiting in my car before the 15k run this weekend I turned on KERA (Public Radio) and was listening to The People’s Pharmacy program. The guest for this week’s show was Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, a neuroscientist and clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After the recurrence of his brain cancer he looked for evidence on ways to strengthen the immune system and prevent cancer. His research led to the writing of the book Anti-Cancer: A New Way of Life.

In the interview he talked about a variety of ways to help prevent cancer and reduce the chances of a recurrence.

Some of the things he talked about were:

  • Why the traditional Western diet creates the conditions for disease and how to develop a science-based anticancer diet
  • How and why sugar and stress feed cancer—and ways to achieve life balance and good nutrition to combat it
  • Why the effects of helplessness and unhealed wounds affect our ability to restore health
  • How to reap the benefits of exercise, yoga, and meditation
  • How to minimize environmental toxins
  • How to find the right blend of traditional and alternative health care

Oh yeah…he is also a founding member of Doctors Without Borders. What a great organization.

I have already ordered this book because as a person who was directly affected by cancer I need to change any unhealthy habits I have and work toward an Anti-Cancer lifestyle.

Tal Morrison Classic 15K

by Rizwan on February 6, 2010

Had a great run at the Tal Morrison Classic today. This race is held in honor of Tal Morrison the founder of The Dallas Running Club and the White Rock Marathon.

My results for the 15K race.

Overall Results
Place: 231 out of 468
Time: 01:24:10
Goal: 01:21:00
Pace: 9:01/mile
Shoes: Asics Speedstar

Felt really good throughout the race. Must improve hill recovery and final burst.
